Spiritual Discernment & Thought Clarity: How to Hear God in a Noisy World
I remember a season not long ago when I was doing all the “right” things. Praying. Journaling. Reading Scripture. But honestly, I felt like I was losing the ability to hear clearly. My heart was sincere, but my thoughts were loud. The problem wasn’t spiritual rebellion. It was internal noise in my mind.
I wasn’t disconnected from God. My mind was just cluttered.
If you’ve ever found yourself in that place, where you’re longing for direction, trying to listen, but can’t seem to make out the voice of God, then hang tight, this message is for you.
Discernment Isn’t Just a Skill, It’s a Spiritual Posture
We often think of spiritual discernment as a superpower reserved for the spiritually elite, but Scripture doesn't describe it that way. Discernment is not about guessing what I think God’s will is in the moment, it’s about becoming intimately familiar with and aware of His presence and voice.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
Jesus didn’t say His sheep earn the right to hear. He said they already do, because of their relationship to the Shepherd.
So if you’ve felt spiritually foggy, unclear, or overwhelmed, know this: the ability to discern isn’t something you have to earn, it’s something you’ve already been given access to through the Holy Spirit. But to hear clearly, we have to turn down the volume of everything else.
